Gibraltar-EU Treaty: Government Approval Secured

by Mark Thompson

Algeciras (Spain)(EuroEFE).- The Ministerial Cabinet of Gibraltar has given the green light to a treaty outlining the future relationship between the territory and the European Union following Brexit. This move could reshape cross-border dynamics and potentially eliminate a longstanding physical barrier.

The Gibraltarian Government stated this Monday that, after six detailed meetings over the past two weeks, it has approved the treaty for ratification, contingent upon no alterations to the text’s core meaning during the ongoing legal review.

Upon availability of the final text, it will be presented to the Gibraltar Parliament via a motion open for debate and amendments.

Parliamentary approval in Gibraltar will then pave the way for the United Kingdom to initiate its own ratification processes for the treaty.

Negotiators from the EU, the United Kingdom and Spain finalized the legal text last December, building upon the agreement reached on June 11 between the EU, the United Kingdom, Spain and Gibraltar. The text is currently undergoing legal scrutiny before signing.

A New Framework for Relations

This agreement aims to regulate Gibraltar’s relationship with Spain post-Brexit, covering key areas such as the movement of people and the flow of goods across the border.

Perhaps the most notable outcome will be the disappearance of the Gate—the physical division separating the British territory from Spain—marking a historic milestone for what is considered one of the world’s smallest border crossings.
