The American design software giant Adobe announced today (Thursday) the purchase of Figma, one of the most popular design tools in the world for building applications and websites. The purchase deal consists of a cash and stock payment worth $20 billion.

Acquires the biggest rival

This is a significant step on Adobe’s part. As you know, the company owns a large number of tools in the field of design; Starting with image design such as Photoshop and Lightroom, through video editing software such as Premiere and image databases, fonts and advanced cloud services. Alongside all these tools, Adobe also has, among other things, a tool that has so far been considered one of Pigma’s biggest competitors – Adobe XD.

Thus, on paper, the American giant can create consolidation in the field of design – and bring both those who used XD and those who used Figma under one umbrella. “The combined company will have significant capabilities and an opportunity for significant expansion in the rapidly growing market, to generate great value for its customers, its shareholders and the industry,” reads the announcement about the purchase published by Adobe.

Adobe has not yet published its business plans for Figma after the completion of the purchase, but it is not impossible that we will soon see the popular tool become part of the family of applications that Adobe offers its users in its monthly subscription – Creative Suite. However, Dylan Field, one of the founders of Pigma and the CEO of the company, wrote in the announcement about the purchase that Pigma will continue to operate independently and he will continue to serve as the CEO. Field will report to the president of Adobe’s digital media division.
