New York Cat Named Giles Wins Nationwide’s Hambone Award for Most Unusual Pet Insurance Claim

Giles, a charismatic black kitty from New York, has become the winner of Nationwide’s Hambone Award for the most unusual pet insurance claim of the year. The Hambone Award, now in its 15th year, recognizes ridiculous and unexpected medical claims made by pets that are insured by Nationwide.

Giles’ winning claim involved an incident where he found himself stuck between a cushion and a hard place, resulting in the need for stitches. The other finalists for the award included a Labrador that took an unexpected jump off a 36-foot-high bridge, a parrot slammed inside a door, and a phone charger chewing pup.

The Hambone Awards were initiated by Nationwide Insurance after a dog got mild hypothermia from getting stuck in a refrigerator and eating an entire ham. “This inspired us to create the Hambone Awards for the most ridiculous medical claims that we have for the pets we insure,” stated Heidi Sirota, Nationwide’s pet insurance president and chief pet officer.

Giles’ owners, Kaitlyn and Reid, shared an amusing anecdote about their adventurous cat. One rule in their apartment is to always check underneath the couch when putting it back together, as Giles has a habit of getting trapped there. Unfortunately, during a visit from Reid’s parents, the rule was forgotten, and Giles found himself stuck once again.

Fortunately, Giles’ injuries were not life-threatening, but he did require stitches. “He’s doing much better now,” Sirota said. However, the incident has left him with a particular fear of anything with a hinge.

As the winners of the Hambone Award, Giles’ family will receive a trophy, gift card, and the opportunity to donate to a pet charity of their choice. Nationwide highlights these unusual stories to emphasize the value of pet insurance and the peace of mind it can provide to pet owners.

The Hambone Awards serve as a reminder to pet owners to ensure their furry companions are protected and have the necessary insurance coverage.
