The Girona startup Orpheus has collaborated with the company Labaqua to validate the implementation of your software, which improves air quality in public transport and in office buildings. The project arose from the experience of the two companies to improve air quality and has contributed to managing the environments in these spaces. His goal is improve people’s health and promote energy efficiencyfrom the deployment of this smart technology.

To promote the pilot tests of this project, Orpheus has had the support of ACCIÓ – the agency for the competitiveness of the company of the Department of Enterprise and Work – through a grant of nearly 15,000 euros through the business disruption aid program, intended to encourage collaboration between startups and corporations.

The companies have focused on two main objectives: on the one hand, to assess the feasibility of installing Internet of Things (IoT) devices in bus networks, and on the other hand, to measure different factors of the air quality (such as the concentration of CO2 and various particles and organic substances) to generate healthy management protocols in offices. Based on the collection of this data and the various indicators, Orpheus technology makes possible what is called “digitalization of space”that is, through the use of this software the collected information is interpreted, which is made available to the users and offers them recommendations for the management of the spaces.

Sustainable and healthy spaces

The intelligent software of Orpheus allows to advise on the management of buildings in order to make them more sustainable and healthy. Specifically, it has sensors and other Internet of Things devices (IoT), uses cloud computing and incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) for decision-making. In this way, it helps the operation of the air conditioning, lighting, ventilation and space occupancy systems, and allows quantitatively evaluate the measured parameters, while proposing recommendations to improve the air in the interior spaces, so that the system manages to self-regulate and guarantee good air quality at all times. Consequently, this process also contributes to energy efficiency and to reducing CO2 emissions in the spaces where the software is installed.

Orpheus: the Trip Advisor for buildings

According to the co-founder and chief technology officer of Orpheus, Massino Angelini, “it has been shown that the means of transport can be a key piece for the construction of smart cities and the IoT infrastructure of the city”, he points out. Referring to the importance of air quality, he stated that “there are studies that indicate that a good indoor environment can boost productivity between 4% and 10%”. “And with our solution we have managed to ensure that the indoor air quality index remains below 100, that is to say, at good or optimal levels”, highlights Angelini.

“The results of the project are satisfactory, as we were able to identify poor ventilation patterns and a new management protocol was established”

Based on this collaboration, Labaqua, which is an expert in the field of air quality in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors, has been able to adapt to apply the Orpheus software in spaces such as large buildings or media of transport The company already has its product on the market since the validation of the project.

Orpheus is a startup based in Girona founded in 2019. It has presence in several international markets of Europe, Latin America and Africa. Since its product was launched in September 2019, it has been used to manage more than 700 non-residential spaces (including shopping malls, public buildings or offices). For its part, Labaqua is a company founded in 1991 and is part of the network of research centers of the Agbar group, within which it offers diagnostic services and solutions in environmental health.
