The rapid recovery of activity after the pandemic allowed Girona’s economy to recover in a single year almost all of GDP which he lost in 2020 as a result of the restrictions that were applied to curb the coronavirus. However, this strong growth was not enough to reduce the distance that separates the Girona counties from the Catalan average, on the contrary, this difference grew.

Specifically, according to the latest data from the Regional Accounting of Spain published this December by the National Institute of Statistics (INE)the province of Girona ended 2021 with a GDP per capita of 27,127 euroswhich meant an increase in 8.4% over the one recorded the previous year and remained 5.3% below what was recorded in 2019. A more than remarkable advance, if you take into account the impact that Covid had on such important sectors for the Girona regions as tourism, despite the fact that the Girona figure is still far from the Catalan average.

Every year more difference

Girona’s economy has less and less weight in Catalonia. The GDP per capita of the demarcation was the lowest in all of Catalonia in 2021, surpassed by Barcelona (30,481 euros), Tarragona (29,617 euros) and Lleida (28,598 euros). A situation that cannot be explained as a consequence of the pandemic, since since 2010 Girona has been the province of Catalonia with the lowest GDP per capita.

The Girona counties closed 2021 with a GDP per capita 9.4% lower than the Catalan average (29,942 euros)the largest difference ever recorded if we take into account the historical series data of lNational Institute of Statisticswhich date back to the year 2000. This gap increased by 0.4% from 2020 to 2021, but has risen by 8 points over the past 13 years.

However, this situation has not always been the case for the demarcation. This positive difference towards Girona’s economy in comparison with the Catalan average ended in 2008, coinciding with the bursting of the real estate bubble. Since then the province’s GDP per capita has always been below the Catalonia average. In fact, the gap has widened year-on-year, with just three exceptions: 2012 when the year-on-year gap fell by 0.2%, 2015 with a 0.5% drop, and 2019 with a drop of 0.3%.

Since then this difference has been reduced by more than 20 points.
