A Gisborne construction worker who rescued an 89-year-old man from a burning home on October 3, 2026, came forward after police issued an appeal, citing his “quick actions” as life-saving.
Tim Morris, a 37-year-old Gisborne resident, broke a window to pull the elderly occupant from a blazing house on Aberdeen Road at around 1am, according to multiple reports. The man, who suffered moderate smoke inhalation, was hospitalized but is recovering well, police confirmed. Morris and a friend then left the scene before later learning of the police appeal through a mutual acquaintance.
The Rescue and the Police Appeal
Senior station officer Tim Lister told the Gisborne Herald that the house’s interior was significantly damaged
after the fire. Police described Morris as a “mystery hero” who probably saved his life
by breaking a window and hauling the man to safety. The appeal, launched to identify the rescuer, was shared by Morris’s friend, prompting him to visit the Gisborne Police station on Sunday morning.
I just wanted to get him out,
Morris said, echoing his statement to multiple outlets. It's been a bit emotional. At the end of the day, helping people makes me feel good.
Detective Senior Sergeant John Love highlighted Morris’s reluctance to seek recognition, noting that his actions made a very real difference
for the elderly man.
Morris’s Humble Response
The incident highlights the role of bystanders in emergencies. Morris and his friend checked for others in the house before alerting neighbors, a detail reported by 1news. The elderly man, whose name has not been disclosed, was taken to hospital and is recovering, according to authorities.
Police Acknowledge the Hero
The police statement echoed this sentiment, saying, He might not consider himself a hero, but his actions made a very real difference to another person on what must have been an incredibly frightening day.
