GitHub Copilot Surpasses 20 Million Users, Signals Maturing AI Coding Market

Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot is rapidly becoming a mainstay in the software development world, reaching over 20 million users as of Wednesday, according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. This milestone, representing “all-time users” as confirmed by a GitHub spokesperson to TechCrunch, underscores the growing demand for AI-powered coding assistance.

The AI coding tool has seen significant growth recently, with five million new users joining in the last three months alone, building on the 15 million reported in April. While Microsoft and GitHub do not disclose monthly or daily active user numbers, industry observers anticipate those figures are considerably lower.

Despite this, the adoption rate among enterprise clients is striking. GitHub Copilot is currently utilized by 90% of companies within the Fortune 100, and the company reports a 75% increase in growth among these enterprise customers compared to the previous quarter. This demonstrates a clear willingness among large organizations to invest in AI solutions that boost developer productivity.

“AI coding tools are rising in popularity, and they seem to be one of the few AI products generating notable revenue,” one analyst noted. In fact, Nadella stated in 2024 that GitHub Copilot had already surpassed the revenue generated by the entirety of GitHub prior to its acquisition by Microsoft in 2018, and its upward trajectory continues.

While the user base of these specialized AI coding tools remains smaller than that of broadly popular AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini, which attract hundreds of millions of monthly users, the software engineering field is inherently more focused. Software engineers and their employers are demonstrably willing to pay a premium for tools that streamline their workflows. Microsoft’s extensive enterprise customer base and GitHub’s established developer ecosystem position GitHub Copilot for continued dominance in the enterprise AI coding market.

However, GitHub isn’t operating without competition. Cursor, a rival AI coding tool, is aggressively challenging Copilot’s position, actively recruiting talent from emerging AI startups. Cursor reportedly boasted over one million daily users in March, generating approximately $200 million in annualized recurring revenue. That figure has since climbed to over $500 million, indicating substantial user growth.

Initially focused on distinct aspects of the developer experience, GitHub Copilot and Cursor are increasingly converging in their offerings. Both companies are now developing AI agents designed to review code, identify bugs, and automate programming tasks, allowing developers to offload repetitive work. Nadella highlighted “great momentum” with GitHub’s AI coding agents during Wednesday’s earnings call.

The competitive landscape extends beyond Cursor. Google, having acquired the core team behind AI coding startup Windsurf, and Cognition, the creator of Devin which subsequently acquired the remaining Windsurf team, are both making significant strides. Furthermore, OpenAI and Anthropic are developing their own AI coding solutions, leveraging their proprietary AI models – Codex and Claude Code, respectively – in an effort to capture market share.

The AI coding space is rapidly evolving into one of the most fiercely contested arenas within the broader AI industry.
