GitHub has walked back a recent change to its Copilot coding assistant, removing the ability for the tool to insert promotional “tips” – essentially advertisements – into developers’ pull requests. The issue first surfaced on Monday when Australian developer Zach Manson noticed an unexpected addition to a pull request he’d submitted. After a colleague used Copilot to correct a typo, Manson found a message within the pull request promoting Raycast, a productivity app. “Quickly spin up Copilot coding agents from anywhere on your macOS or Windows machine with Raycast,” the message read, complete with a lightning bolt emoji and a link to download the application. Manson detailed his experience in a blog post, expressing surprise and concern over the unsolicited promotion.
It quickly became clear Manson’s experience wasn’t isolated. A search on GitHub revealed that over 11,400 pull requests contained the same Copilot-inserted tip, and further investigation showed numerous examples of different promotional messages being added by the AI assistant. Developers were able to locate the code block responsible for injecting these tips, highlighting the extent of the automated advertising.
The core of the issue, as Manson pointed out, wasn’t simply the presence of an ad, but the fact that Copilot was altering code within pull requests – contributions submitted by developers for review and integration – without their explicit consent. “I wasn’t even aware that the GitHub Copilot Review integration had the ability to edit other users’ descriptions and comments,” Manson told The Register. “I can’t feel of a valid use case for that ability.”
GitHub Responds to Developer Backlash
The response from GitHub was relatively swift. Within hours of the issue gaining traction, Martin Woodward, GitHub’s VP of developer relations, addressed the concerns on X (formerly Twitter).
