GL Peiris chairs the delegation that will handle the Geneva session

The government has announced that External Affairs Minister Prof. GL Peiris will chair the Sri Lankan delegation to the 49th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

The 49th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council will be held in Geneva from 28 February to 1 April 2022.

It has also been announced that the Minister of Foreign Affairs will address the High Level Session of the 49th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Professor Peiris will then address a panel discussion on Sri Lanka.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights will present a written update on Sri Lanka.

Following this, the issue related to Sri Lanka will be left for discussion on March 3, 2022.

The Sri Lankan government has announced that it will hold meetings with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and key officials during the visit.

The Sri Lankan government had rejected a resolution on Sri Lanka in March last year at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

It is noteworthy that the Government of Sri Lanka has stated that the Human Rights Council cannot act contrary to the policies of the United Nations and that a resolution cannot be passed against a particular country.
