Gladiator 2 will continue the story of Lucius Verus (played by Paul Mescal), the adopted son of Emperor Commodus who was killed at the end of the first film.

The film will explore the impact that Maximus had on the history of Rome and how Lucius tries to find his own way as a leader.

The film will also include a romantic subplot between Lucius and a slave (Barry Keoghan), who is actually the daughter of Commodus, the son of the philosopher emperor Marcus Aurelius and the main antagonist of the first film, accused of patricide and despotism.

Gladiator 2 will include scenes set in several cities of the Roman Empire, including Rome, Alexandria, but also in provinces such as Roman Britain.

There will be spectacular scenes of gladiator fights, with advanced special effects and professional stuntmen.

The story behind Gladiator 2

The movie Gladiator 2 will feature the transition from the reign of Emperor Geta (according to IMDb, rumored to be played by Barry Keoghan) to the reign of Emperor Caracalla (Joseph Quinn).

Geta was Roman emperor from 209 to 211, together with his father, Septimius Severus (founder of the Severus Dynasty), and his older brother, Caracalla.

After his father’s death in 211, he ruled together with Caracalla, but the two brothers never got along and divided the imperial palace into two parts.

Geta was assassinated by Caracalla on December 26, 211, dying in his mother’s arms.

Caracalla followed him to the throne.

He was an authoritarian and bloody ruler who persecuted those who supported Geta and waged costly wars against the Parthians and Germans.

But he was also considered a good emperor because he issued the edict of 212 by which he granted Roman citizenship to all the free inhabitants of the empire. He built the public baths in Rome that bear his name (Baths of Caracalla) and introduced a new currency into circulation – the Antoninianus.

Caracalla was killed by a soldier on April 8, 217, near Edessa (Urfa), at the instigation of the praetorian prefect Macrinus, who usurped his throne.

Macrinus did not last long on the throne, being removed from power and executed. He was succeeded by Elagabalus, an emperor despised for extravagance, decadence, zeal and sexual promiscuity, but above all, because he proclaimed himself the king of the Roman pantheon, replacing Jupiter. He was also the first emperor who tried to change his sex.

He reigned from 218 to 222, and his reign was considered more controversial than Caligula’s so that filmmakers avoided portraying him.

Elagabalus was assassinated, beheaded, and his naked body was dragged through the streets of Rome and thrown into the Tiber.

He was succeeded by Severus Alexander who reigned from 222 until his assassination in 235, being the last dynastic emperor and following a long line of usurping generals, which marked the beginning of the crisis of the 3rd century AD.

Soon, the Roman Empire went into decline due to the invasions of the Germanic peoples and internal divisions.
