UN, USA and EU call for democratic transition in Bangladesh

The EU, USA and UN are urging a peaceful transition to democratic governance in Bangladesh after the country’s Prime Minister fled the country and the army took control.

– The EU calls for calm and restraint. It is crucial to ensure a peaceful transition to a democratically elected government, in full compliance with human rights and democratic principles, said EU Foreign Affairs Chief Josep Borrell in a statement on Monday.

Bangladesh’s Chief of Defence, Waker-Uz-Zaman, stated earlier in the day that the army will form a temporary government after having talks with the main opposition parties.

– We request that the formation of a transitional government is democratic and inclusive. We commend the army for the restraint they have shown today, said a spokesperson for the White House in a statement.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasizes the necessity of establishing a democratic and peaceful transition. The UN chief further calls for the population’s human rights to be respected, and he states that a full, independent, and impartial investigation is needed into all acts of violence that have occurred during the protests.

Over 300 people have been killed in the wave of protests in Bangladesh in recent weeks.
