Abu Dhabi: A 109 km track velodrome with a capacity of 3500 spectators is coming up on Hudairiyat Island in Abu Dhabi Emirate, which is becoming a global cycling hub. Last year, Union Cyclist International (UCI) selected Abu Dhabi as Bike City as a result of efforts to make the emirate cycling-friendly. Abu Dhabi is the first city in West Asia and Asia to achieve this status.

According to Jonathan Imari, Chief Executive of Aldar Development, the country’s leading property development company, Abu Dhabi is fast becoming a global cycling hub. Cycling in Abu Dhabi has grown in popularity over the past decade. The developed tracks are suitable for cycling for all ages.

Abu Dhabi bought a majority stake in bicycle manufacturing company Colnago two years ago.

This company’s bicycle was used by ‘Team Emirates’ at the Tour de France. Tadaj Pogakar, the rider of Team Emirates, who won in the last two seasons, finished as the runner-up this time. Abu Dhabi, which has won the status of Bike City, will host the UCI Urban Cycling World Championship in November this year. In 2024, the same World Cup will be staged in Abu Dhabi.
