Samsung Electronics ranks first in DRAM sales… SK Hynix ranks first in profitability
“DRAM prices, Q3 also exceeds expectations, rising trend expected to continue”
The global DRAM industry performance increased significantly in the second quarter of this year. This is because demand increased, prices rose, and shipments also increased. Memory companies such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix are expected to continue their growth in the third quarter.
According to market research firm TrendForce on the 15th, DRAM sales in the second quarter amounted to $22.91 billion, up 24.8% from the previous quarter ($18.347 billion).
TrendForce said that “this was driven by increased shipments of mainstream products that boosted manufacturers’ profits,” and that “the earthquake that struck Taiwan in early April and the strong demand for HBM (high-bandwidth memory) products led DRAM buyers to shift to more aggressive purchasing strategies as a major factor.” The DRAM average transaction price (ASP) rose 13-18% from the previous quarter.
By company, Samsung Electronics maintained its undisputed first place, but the gap with second-place SK Hynix narrowed.
Samsung Electronics’ second-quarter sales increased 22% from the previous quarter to $9.82 billion, but its market share decreased 1 percentage point from 43.9% in the previous quarter to 42.9%.
SK Hynix posted revenue of $7.911 billion, up 38.7% from the previous quarter. SK Hynix’s market share in the second quarter was 34.5%, up 3.4%p from 31.1% in the previous quarter. The gap in market share between the two companies narrowed from 12.8%p to 8.4%p.
In particular, SK Hynix surpassed Samsung Electronics in terms of DRAM operating profit margin. Samsung Electronics’ DRAM operating profit in the second quarter was 37%, while SK Hynix’s was 45%.
Micron, ranked third in the industry, posted sales of $4.5 billion, up 14.1% from the previous quarter, but its market share fell 1.9 percentage points from 21.5% to 19.6%.
TrendForce said that the negotiation situation between DRAM manufacturers and customers in the third quarter exceeded expectations due to geopolitical risks. Accordingly, it revised the increase rate for the third quarter to 8-13%, 5 percentage points higher than its previous forecast.
According to TrendForce, Chinese data center companies have been aggressively stockpiling inventory, doubling their purchases of server DRAM products since the second quarter due to concerns over U.S. sanctions. As a result, U.S. data center companies are under pressure to raise their procurement prices.
TrendForce said, “Due to geopolitical factors, the increase in existing DRAM contract prices in Q3 will exceed our previous forecast,” and “SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics are prioritizing HBM production over DDR5, so DRAM prices are unlikely to decline in the coming quarters.”
Meanwhile, TrendForce reported that Samsung Electronics has started producing HBM3E wafers at its factory in order to ship the 5th generation HBM ‘HBM3E’ in a timely manner after product verification.
