According to the EU Earth observation program Copernicus For the first time, over a period of twelve months, it was consistently above 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial era. From February 2023 to January 2024, the global average temperature was 1.52 degrees Celsius above the reference value in the 19th century, Copernicus announced this Thursday. The average temperature of 13.14 degrees Celsius in January 2024 was a historical record for the first calendar month.

“1.5 is a very large number and it harms us very seriously in terms of heatwaves, droughts, floods, increased storms and water shortages around the world,” Johan Rockström from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) told AFP “That’s what 2023 taught us.” Rockström spoke of a “warning to humanity”.

In order to avert the catastrophic consequences of climate change, the international community agreed in the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015 to limit global warming to well below two degrees, but if possible to 1.5 degrees compared to the pre-industrial era.

According to Copernicus, in the calendar year 2023, the global average temperature was 1.48 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels (1850-1900).

Copernicus evaluates global data from satellites and ground-based, airborne and sea-based measurement systems.
