Goalkeeper dies suddenly after stopping a penalty

The 25-year-old goalkeeper suddenly collapsed shortly after saving a penalty in a game against Westrozebeke. The emergency services did their best to save him using a defibrillator, however goalkeeper Arne Espeel was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at hospital.

The match took place at the club’s headquarters in Sint-Eloois-Winkel, West Flanders province, Belgium. They were playing a match in the West Brabant provincial second division when the tragedy occurred.

According to what was reported by local media, Arne Espeel had become the hero of his squad after managing to save a penalty, however, to the surprise of his teammates and his rivals, the goalkeeper fainted on the pitch and died in a few moments.

So far, the causes of Arne Espeel’s death are completely unknown, although some media began to speculate about a possible heart condition in the young goalkeeper who lost his life at the age of 25. The cause of death has not yet been determined and an autopsy is scheduled to take place today (February 13).

The club statement

Due to the unfortunate death of the goalkeeper, the sports team has released a statement in which they send their condolences to the family and friends of the young man who suddenly lost his life during the game.

After the terrible news, the club issued the following statement: “Arne played with us since he was a teenager, and everyone really adored him.

“It is incomprehensible that something like this could have happened to someone so young. Before he was a young man in perfect health. Patrick Rotsaert, Winkel’s sporting director, later stated: “It’s a calamity and a shock for all of us.”

“Arne was a good guy, always willing to help others. For his family and for our entire club, in particular, he is a devastating blow.”

Eendracht Hooglede, Winkel’s sister club, stated: “We have been horrified to read about the death of Arne Espeel. We will observe a minute of silence for his tragic death.

In addition, the Winkel Sport B players will tour the streets of the town of Sint-Eloois-Winkel, in West Flanders, today to remember their deceased teammate.
