The match between Ajax and Waalwijk was suspended with six minutes remaining after the strong clash between RKC goalkeeper, Etienne Vaessen, and the ‘ajacied’ Brian Brobbey.
The goalkeeper went out to get a ball and received a fortuitous blow to the head, leaving him lying on the field of play and setting off all the alarms. The assistants jumped onto the field immediately to assist him and he had to be resuscitated. After several minutes he was evacuated on a stretcher to be hospitalized.
Vaessen’s teammates shouted for medical help, and as soon as an assistant ran to the sideline for an automated external defibrillator, everyone realized the seriousness of the situation.
Players from both teams crossed themselves and some of Vaessen’s teammates were escorted to the sideline in tears.
The stadium announcer reported that the match had been temporarily suspended and that they were checking to see if the players could continue playing, which did not happen.

Waalwijk announced that it will not provide details on Vaessen’s physical condition on Saturday night and that the prognosis is reserved.
Initially, there were those who feared for the goalkeeper’s life after witnessing images that were reminiscent of those starring Christian Eriksen in the last Euro Cup, however it was later detailed that Vaessen had regained consciousness and was taken to a hospital.
