Panthers inform that both goalkeepers suffered serious injuries and will undergo surgery; Tomé Sousa is preparing to take over the position
Alert in the goal of Boavista: João Gonçalves and Luís Pires suffered serious injuries and will face (quite) prolonged absences.
The checkered emblem informed this morning that both goalkeepers are in the medical bulletin, as both “suffered, during training last Tuesday, tears of the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee.”
According to the aforementioned note, both João Gonçalves and Luís Pires “will undergo surgical intervention in the coming days, with a prolonged recovery period anticipated for both athletes.”
Shortly after, goalkeeper César Dutra was announced as a new signing:
Brazilian goalkeeper signed until June 2025/2026
Considering the specifics of the injuries, both João Gonçalves and Luís Pires are expected to be out for several months, with the best-case scenario being that they may hope to return to the pitch only in the final part of the season. It should be noted that João Gonçalves has been one of the undisputed players for Boavista: after 37 games last season, he has already played 4 this season. This is, therefore, a huge setback for Cristiano Bacci.
In light of this scenario, the door is open for a young player who is only… 17 years old. Tomé Sousa, who would initially be the third goalkeeper of the Boavista squad, will be the one defending the goal in the coming times.
A native of Maia, Tomé Sousa (who has two caps for Portugal’s under-18 team) completed all his training at Boavista and has been part of the first team since last season. He has not yet played a game for the top division of Boavista – this season he has even been used in the under-19 team – so his debut is just around the corner. Next Monday (8:15 PM), the owner of the number 76 shirt will defend the Panthers’ goal at Estrela da Amadora, in the 5th round of the league. It will, by all accounts, be the first day of the rest of Tomé Sousa’s life…
