The 31-year-old Gobers also received such an honor in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
Until now, only two players in NBA history had received this award four times – Dikembe Mutombo (1995, 1997, 1998 and 2000) and Ben Wallace (2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006).
In the vote, Gobert beat his compatriot and this season’s best NBA rookie Victor Wembanyam of the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat center Bama Adebayo.
Gobert topped 72 votes, Vembanyama received 19 votes as best defensive player and Adebayo was ranked first three times.
Gobert played 76 games for the Timberwolves this season and averaged 14.0 points, 12.9 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and 1.3 assists per game.
The Timberwolves were the best defensive team in points allowed in the regular season and finished third in the Western Conference with a record of 56-26, one win behind the conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder.
In the first round of the NBA playoffs, the Minnesota team defeated the Phoenix Suns 4-0, but in the second round, they are leading 2-0 against last season’s champion, the Denver Nuggets.
Tomorrow, the league’s most prestigious individual award – the most valuable player of the NBA season, or MVP – will be presented. Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets, Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks and Shay Gilges-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder are vying for it.
NBA season awards are given for performance in the main tournament.
