Gochang Munsusa’s wooden seated Buddha statue and clothing relics were designated as tangible cultural heritage of Jeollabuk-do. Gochang-gun announced that the ‘Gochang Munsusa Wooden Seated Shakyamuni Buddha and Costume Relics’ was designated and notified as a tangible cultural heritage of Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province on December 27.

The wooden seated Sakyamuni Buddha statue of Munsusa Temple still has a prayer text that confirms the date of production (1755, 31st year of King Yeongjo’s reign of the Joseon Dynasty), maker (other than Sangjeong), background of production, and place where the Buddha statue was enshrined. It has academic and artistic value, including excellent carving style. It was recognized as an important work in the study of Buddhist sculpture in the 18th century.

The seated Buddha statue is small, measuring about 58.5 cm, and the width of the knees and the upper body are well harmonized, and the characteristics of excellent statues of Buddha are especially well expressed in the facial features, hands, and wrinkles of the clothes.

The relics include the ‘Worman’ and ‘Huryeongtong (候鈴筒)’ wrapped in a cloth called ‘Hwangchobokja’, ‘Dharani’ in manuscript and woodblock, and 28 books including three types of ‘Lotus Sutra’.

Na Yoon-ok, head of the Gochang-gun Culture and Arts Department, said, “This year, along with the designation of Gochang Munsusa Temple as a Provincial Cultural Heritage, the ‘Gochang Munsusa Temple Main Hall’ was promoted to a treasure last July, resulting in 4 nationally designated heritage sites (3 treasures, 1 natural monument) and 4 provincially designated heritage sites. “As we possess a number of national heritage sites, including dots, we will develop more systematic conservation and utilization plans for national heritage,” he said.

Meanwhile, Gochang-gun announced on the 27th that it recently purchased land (3,105㎡) owned by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance next to the Gochang Post Office and will use it as an important space for the rural center revitalization project.

The site was located in the core area of Gochang-eup, but was owned by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance and remained empty for the past 26 years.

Afterwards, the county established a business plan for ‘Rural Center Revitalization Space’ and was able to complete the purchase after persistent persuasion, including more than three visits to the Ministry of Strategy and Finance this year alone.

Accordingly, it is expected that the ‘Local Food Direct Store’ and ‘Rural Agreement Center’ promoted by Gochang-gun will gain momentum.

It is a 3-story building with a land area of 3,105㎡ and a total area of 1,500㎡. The first floor will be used as a local food store, the second floor will be used as a childcare center, youth and youth cultural space, multi-purpose room, and the agreement center office and conference room on the third floor. .

Previously, local food direct stores have been presented as a way to provide stable sales channels and income generation opportunities for small, medium, and elderly farmers in the region.

In addition, a rural agreement base center will be operated to oversee and coordinate rural agreement projects worth 43.7 billion won in 13 regions of Gochang-gun.

Gochang County Mayor Shim Deok-seop said, “By organically connecting town/myeon locations and each village, residents will be able to easily and conveniently receive a variety of services.” He added, “We will continue to increase the utilization of neglected space for the convenience of residents and urban development.” “He said.
