LOS ANGELES, January 26, 2026 – Amazon’s upcoming live-action God of War series is already assembling a formidable cast, and last night’s declaration confirms that Severance star Ólafur Darri Ólafsson will embody the complex character of Thor, the Norse God of Thunder.
A shadow of His Former Self: Thor’s Dark Turn
The series promises a nuanced portrayal of Thor, mirroring his depiction in the critically acclaimed 2022 game, God of War Ragnarök.
What’s driving Thor’s despair? according to the character description, the God of Thunder is haunted by past wars and seeks solace in alcohol, isolating himself from his family while a perilous power still simmers beneath the surface.
Amazon describes the series’ Thor as “a mountain of a man who has weathered many a battle in his time, but whose actions in a war fought long ago now haunt his waking hours.” The description, revealed January 25, 2026, further details that he is “now but a shadow of his former self,” attempting to drown his demons in drink and distancing himself from loved ones. Despite his isolation,”the power (and danger) of the God of Thunder is still there just beneath the surface.”
Hurst, Palmer, and Parker round out the announced cast as Kratos, Phoebe/Sif, and Heimdall, respectively. Ronald D. Moore, a former executive producer of Battlestar Galactica, will serve as showrunner, and Emmy-winning Shōgun director Frederick E.O.Toye is also on board.
The series will follow Kratos and his son Atreus as they journey to honor their deceased wife and mother, Faye. The official logline states that the story will explore Kratos’ attempts to guide his son toward becoming a better god, while Atreus strives to help his father embrace his humanity. The question on everyone’s mind: who will portray Atreus?
While a release date remains unknown, Amazon has already greenlit a second season, even as the first is still in advancement.
