New Delhi,

58 people were killed in the 2002 Sabarmati train burning incident in Godhra, Gujarat. This led to the Gujarat riots. In 2011, the trial court sentenced 11 accused to death, 20 to life imprisonment and acquitted 63.

Later the Gujarat High Court commuted the death sentence of 11 people to life imprisonment.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court yesterday heard the appeal filed by Abdul Rahman Thandia, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in the case.

“According to the Gujarat government’s policies, the Godhra train burning convicts cannot seek early release, and the 11 convicts in the Godhra train burning case should be hanged,” argued Solicitor General Tushar Mehta on behalf of the Gujarat government.

After recording the argument, the Supreme Court adjourned the hearing for three weeks.
