Created more than ten years ago, online pots, initially confined to private events, are increasingly present in public life. A far cry from collecting money for a birthday or wedding present, they are now “solidaritywith, as a result, amounts that can reach astronomical sums. This booming phenomenon is surfing in particular on the digitization of purchases, while online payments have exploded in recent years, including between individuals.

The most publicized of the moment, but also the most controversial, was opened on GoFundMe “in support of the Nanterre policeman’s family“, suspected of having killed Nahel in Nanterre (92) a week ago. The prize pool, which exceeded the 1.5 million euros collected on Tuesday, helps to establish the notoriety of this American platform, which is growing in France. While during its first six months on the French market in 2017, the amount of donations collected by GoFundMe in France reached 655,000 euros, it was 3.7 million euros over the same period in 2023.
