Goheung-gun is the only county in Korea to begin a full-scale project to build a future aircraft evaluation base. Goheung-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Gong Yeong-min) is beginning a full-scale project to build an ‘eco-friendly aircraft electric propulsion system evaluation base’.

According to the military, a business launch meeting was held for two days starting on the 4th at Goheung Sun Valley Resort to sign business agreements between participating organizations, announce each organization’s implementation plan, and discuss cooperation matters.

In particular, on the first day, five organizations, including Jeollanam-do, Goheung-gun, Korea Conformity Laboratories (KCL), Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), and Chonnam National University, signed a business agreement and pledged organic cooperation for successful project execution.

This project is to build a performance evaluation center in the Goheung Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Farming Technology Specialized Agricultural and Industrial Complex by investing a total of KRW 19.64 billion, including KRW 10 billion in national funds, over five years until 2028. Through this, Goheung-gun plans to complete the future aviation full-cycle system encompassing testing, evaluation, verification, and certification of electric propulsion systems.

The evaluation center will establish standards for component and airframe evaluations, including electric power and charge/discharge evaluations, multi-axis thrust tests, simulated environmental tests, and Iron Bird evaluations, and will perform corporate support tasks such as solving corporate technical issues, fostering and attracting regionally-led companies, establishing overseas technology cooperation networks, and consulting on commercialization of market development.

The military expects that once the evaluation center is established, key components of domestic electric propulsion future aircraft will undergo performance testing at the Goheung Evaluation Center, and that this will facilitate investment attraction by excellent aircraft companies linked to the local aviation industry infrastructure through technical support and consulting for related companies.

A military official said, “Goheung-gun has taken the first step toward taking the lead in the domestic electric aircraft industry and becoming a leading city in the future aviation industry,” and added, “We will push forward with the project at a rapid pace to develop the local aviation industry and achieve a population of 100,000 in Goheung by 2030.”

Meanwhile, Goheung-gun is building a 40,000-pyeong Goheung drone farming technology specialized agricultural and industrial complex in the Aviation Center area, and plans to complete the construction and sell it in the second half of 2026.
