The number of young people helping their families with their own businesses without pay has increased significantly this year.

According to the economically active population survey microdata from Statistics Korea on the 8th, the monthly average number of unpaid family workers among young people (aged 15-29) from January to May this year was 33,374, an increase of about 3,800 (about 13%) compared to the same month last year (29,570).

Unpaid family workers are employed people who help out in a self-employed business run by a family member or relative without receiving compensation.

The number of young unpaid family workers, which stood at 62,643 from January to May 2020, had been decreasing every year until last year, but has started to increase again this year.

By age, the number of unpaid family workers has increased significantly, especially among those in their late 20s (25–29 years old).

The number of unpaid family workers in their late 20s from January to May this year was 23,562, an increase of about 1,800 from the same period last year.

In contrast, unpaid family workers decreased in all age groups except youth.

The number of unpaid family workers in their 30s and 40s decreased by 7,700 and 9,400 from the previous year, to 76,683 and 123,193, respectively.

The number of unpaid family workers in their 60s or older (404,885 people), which is the largest group, decreased by about 400 people during the same period, and the number of unpaid family workers in their 50s (217,574 people) also decreased by about 1,500 people.

However, Statistics Korea explains that if the increase/decrease sample is less than 10,000 people, there may be statistical errors, so caution is needed in interpretation.
