2.3% in Catalonia

In Catalonia, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) climbed four tenths in July and stood at 2.3% compared to the same month last year. This is the second lowest year-on-year change since April 2021. The indicator has grown after two consecutive months of decline. Girona has the lowest inflation figure in all of Catalonia, behind Lleida (1.9), Tarragona (2.0) and Barcelona (2.5).

The data from Catalonia have coincided with those from the State, where the CPI has also placed the monthly variation at 0.2% and the year-on-year variation at 2.3%, leaving behind the June figure (1.9%) which was the lowest since April 2021. The INE has attributed the increase to the price of transport -especially fuel- and food -especially fruit and oil-.

As for the underlying inflation, which discounts the most volatile prices, in the State it has also stood at 6.2%. In this way, it rebounds after five months of declines. When this indicator falls below 5.5%, the Spanish government will eliminate the reduction in VAT on basic foods.

It should be borne in mind, however, that year-on-year comparisons are made with June 2022, when the CPI shot up to 10.3% in Catalonia, the highest in the historical series.
