Gokseong-gun operates an ‘eco-friendly rice seed hot water disinfection facility’. Gokseong-gun announced that it plans to operate a ‘rice seed sterilization facility’ from April 17 to May 17 at the Agricultural Technology Center to welcome the full-scale farming season.
Accordingly, the county has established a hot water disinfection facility at the Agricultural Technology Center and provides hot water disinfection services for rice seeds. In addition, 10 myeon agricultural machinery rental offices also installed their own hot water sterilizers and provided support for rice seed sterilization to farmers in need.
Rice seed sterilization is the first step in producing high-quality rice by preventing infectious seed diseases such as rice stem disease, rice blast, sesame seed spot disease, bacterial rice kernel blight, ear yeast disease, and rice leaf nematode.
The disinfection method requires first selecting healthy rice seeds through desiccant or salt water selection, and then preparing completely dried rice seeds.
Afterwards, the rice seeds are disinfected with hot water without using pesticides. Complete the process by soaking the rice seeds in 65℃ water for 7 minutes (or 60℃ water for 10 minutes), then taking them out and cooling them in cold water for 2 to 30 minutes.
In order to increase the disinfection effect, it is important to place an appropriate amount of rice seeds (less than 10 kg) in a net to ensure good water circulation and maintain a constant water temperature during the disinfection time. In the case of eco-friendly cultivation, additional lime sulfur (22% solution) is added after hot water disinfection. ) can be diluted 50 times and soaked for 24 hours to increase the effectiveness of controlling long leg disease by more than 99%.
An official from the county agricultural technology center said, “As hot water sterilization of rice seeds is an essential process for producing high-quality rice, we will thoroughly promote it to farmers,” and added, “We expect to improve rice quality and productivity through hot water disinfection.”
To use the hot water disinfection facility, call the Agricultural Technology Center or the industrial team at any of the 10 myeon offices (excluding Gokseong-eup) to receive guidance on preparations for hot water disinfection of rice seeds.
