The journey ends on a narrow road at a small promontory on the less developed northern shore of the Bodrum Peninsula. Here, tucked behind a pine-clad hillside overlooking the deep blue Aegean, lies a new, fairly exclusive oasis that draws visitors in immediately, the noise, hustle and bustle of the seafront promenade seeming light-years away.

The “Bodrum Loft” was opened two years ago and, like other holiday resorts, is only open from May to October – and yet it is very different from the typical hotel complexes on the Turkish peninsula: This place here is low-key and quiet, with an emphasis on simple luxury and privacy much importance is attached. It was inspired by the outdoor lifestyle that people in Bodrum have lived for centuries. The Istanbul architecture firm Tabanlıoğlu, for example, created a modern version of an Aegean village with flat-roofed houses and winding streets that blends relatively seamlessly into the landscape and seeks to reconcile sustainability and luxury. For this, great attention is paid to nature. There are 36 private villas on the sprawling, six-hectare site, with buildings taking up around a third of the total area. The rest is left to nature and should not be sealed. Embedded in rocky terrain with a view of the Aegean Sea, the living spaces open like viewing platforms into the surrounding nature. They are surrounded by a lush forest of olive, sandalwood, laurel, mastic, cranberry and citrus trees.
