Nagrota Bagwan (Himachal Pradesh): Olympian Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won gold in the first Khelo India Women’s Weightlifting League. Chanu, a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics, lifted a total of 191 kg (86, 105) in the 49 kg category to secure gold. Chanu could not break his own national record as he fell behind in the snatch.

Chanu set a national record by lifting 88 kg in the snatch at the 2020 National Championships. Ganeshwari Yadav won silver in the 170 kg category and Jili Dalabehra won bronze in the 166 kg category.

Mirabai Chanu said the goal is to lift 90 kg in the snatch at next month’s Commonwealth Games. For the athlete to lift 105 kg in the first instance of clean and jerk. Chanu holds the world record for lifting 119 kg. Ganeshwari lifted only 92 kg and Dalabehra 91 kg. Chanu did not want to take two or three chances as the gold was secured.
