Gold Prices Face Fourth Weekly Decline as Treasury Yields Surge

Gold prices hovered near $4,282 per ounce on Friday as mounting rate-hike expectations and surging Treasury yields drove the metal toward its fourth weekly decline in five weeks. Markets are weighing persistent inflation pressures against an anticipated shift in central bank policy heading into the upcoming Federal Reserve meeting.

Federal Reserve Rate Expectations and Treasury Yield Pressures

Gold faced renewed downward momentum as higher US Treasury yields and persistent inflation risks eroded the appeal of non-yielding bullion. The US benchmark 10-year bond yield touched a fresh 19-year high, pushing borrowing costs upward and increasing the opportunity cost for investors holding precious metals. Spot gold was recently reported up 0.1 percent at $4,282.98 per ounce, while US gold futures settled higher at $4,321.20 per ounce, tracking toward a weekly loss of about 2.1 percent.

The unrelenting surge in Treasury yields has set gold on course for its 4th weekly decline over the past five weeks, said Han Tan, chief market analyst at Bybit, as cited by The Economic Times.

Market participants are closely monitoring upcoming US macroeconomic data, including the August PCE deflator and September jobs figures. According to Kitco, Marc Chandler, managing director at Bannockburn Global Forex, noted that the PCE release is expected to incorporate a methodological adjustment that could shave some inflation off the headline figure. Traders are also pricing in high probabilities for additional monetary tightening following the central bank’s recent quarter-point rate increase, which marked its first hike in three years.

Geopolitical Developments and Energy Market Influence

Energy prices and Middle East diplomacy continued to inject volatility into precious metals trading throughout the week. Early attempts by gold to stabilize above $4,350 were undercut by geopolitical tensions tied to the US-Israeli war on Iran and concerns surrounding the Strait of Hormuz. Spot gold initially kicked off the week trading at $4,383.44 per ounce and touched a weekly high of $4,387.51 before selling pressure took hold.

Negotiations in New York exploring a phased path out of war offered some relief to energy markets. Discussions involve Tehran reopening the Strait of Hormuz while Washington lifts its economic blockade, developments that contributed to an oil price drop of about 3 percent and supported a modest recovery in silver, platinum, and palladium alongside gold.

Wall Street and Main Street Divergence on Gold Outlook

Market analysts remain sharply divided over whether bullion will find a definitive floor or extend its correction. While institutional sentiment shows mixed conviction, retail investors maintaining a bullish stance continue to eye long-term structural drivers such as ongoing central bank purchases.

Investors are starting to come around to the fact that there is only so far the FED can raise rates… since we cannot afford the current debt servicing of $1.6 trillion per annum (4% of $40 trillion). And since Congress will never stop overspending, gold will go higher. This is a no-brainer.

Conversely, bearish voices point to the persistent strength of the US dollar and vulnerable bond markets. James Stanley, senior market strategist at Forex.com, highlighted to Kitco that the ongoing issue with bond yields is unlikely to resolve immediately, suggesting traders should watch for a potential spike in yields that could establish a tradable low for bullion near long-term technical supports.

Technical Levels and Domestic Commodity Pricing

In domestic commodity markets tracked via the Multi Commodity Exchange, silver and gold have similarly drifted into consolidation phases. Abhilash Koikkara, head of forex and commodities at Nuvama Professional Clients Group, noted in The Times of India that MCX gold maintains a sideways to bearish bias, with immediate support identified near the 148,000 level and resistance pegged at 155,000. MCX silver similarly trades inside a broader range, holding key support near 225,000 against immediate resistance at 245,000.
