Swede Henrik Stenson has been relieved of his duties as captain of the European Ryder Cup team for the 2023 edition, team officials announced on July 20, citing “decisions taken by Henrik in connection with his personal situation “.

The mandate of the Scandinavian golfer, 46, appointed to this function last March, ended “with immediate effect”, explained Ryder Cup Europe in a press release.

The next edition of the Ryder Cup will take place in Rome from September 25 to October 1, 2023. The first Swede to be named captain for Europe, Henrik Stenson had a long history in this biennial competition which opposes American and European golfers formed into teams of twelve players .

He helped the Europeans win three of his five appearances (2006, 2014 and 2018) and was vice-captain in 2020. The American team won the last edition of the Ryder Cup in Whistling Straits (Wisconsin) in September 2021.
