‘Golf queen’ Inbee Park (36), who is running for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athletes’ Commission, has arrived in Paris and plans to begin full-scale election campaigning.

According to ‘MyInfo’, the official information site of the 2024 Paris Olympic Organizing Committee, on the 22nd (Korean time), the results of the IOC Athletes’ Commission election will be announced on August 7th at the Main Press Center (MPC) located in the Palais des Congrès in Paris, France.

At this Paris Games, players will vote to elect replacements for four player members whose terms are expiring, including Korea Table Tennis Association President Ryu Seung-min, who was elected as an IOC player member at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

In Korea, Inbee Park is the candidate. Inbee Park was selected as the candidate in August last year, beating out strong domestic competitors such as Jin Jong-oh (shooting), Kim Yeon-kyung (volleyball), and Oh Jin-hyeok (archery).

The IOC Athletes’ Commission election will be held during the Paris Olympics. From the opening day of the games on the 26th to the 11th of next month, approximately 10,000 Olympians will cast their votes at polling stations set up in the athletes’ village and various stadiums.

A total of 32 candidates (14 men, 18 women), including Inbee Park, were selected from each country, and the four who received the most votes will be eligible to serve as athletes’ representatives for an eight-year term. Athletes’ representatives represent the voices of athletes on various sports stages and have the same status as general representatives.

Inbee Park, who postponed her departure somewhat due to a cold, plans to arrive in Paris on the 22nd local time and begin full-scale election campaigning.

Inbee Park, who recently announced her second pregnancy, planned an efficient campaign route while paying attention to her physical strength. She is determined to win the hearts of the players by running around as much as possible as conditions allow.

Meanwhile, August 7, the announced date for the results announcement, is the day when the Paris Olympics women’s golf competition begins. Eight years after Inbee Park, the gold medalist at the 2016 Rio Games, Jin-young Ko (Solaire) and Hyo-joo Kim (Lotte) will be challenging for medals.

If Inbee Park is elected as an IOC Athletes’ Commission member, she will be the third Korean to do so.

Previously, Taekwondo’s Moon Dae-sung was selected for the 2008 Beijing Olympics and served for 8 years, and the baton was passed on to Korea Table Tennis Association President Ryu Seung-min for the 2016 Rio Olympics. President Ryu’s term as an athlete representative ends at the upcoming Paris Olympics.

Currently, Korea has three IOC members: Lee Ki-heung, President of the Korea Sports Council, Kim Jae-yeol, President of the International Skating Union (ISU), and member Ryu Seung-min.
