The most significant Italian fiction of the last decade (Sky Atlantic) reaches its epilogue. And it does so by putting the two absolute protagonists back at the center: Genny Savastano (Salvatore Esposito) and Ciro Di Marzio (Marco D’Amore)

Genny and Ciro again face to face, again accomplices and enemies. “Gomorrah – The series” reaches its epilogue and does so by putting the two absolute protagonists of a long saga at the center, of what remains the most significant Italian fiction of the last decade (Sky Atlantic). Genny Savastano (Salvatore Esposito) and Ciro Di Marzio (Marco D’Amore, who also directs six episodes of this final act, the other four are signed by Claudio Cupellini) are the pillars of a narrative arc that from 2014 to today has seen the birth and undoing alliances, falling bosses of rank one after the other, small and medium-sized aspirants, various laborers recruited for the most violent and ruthless criminal activities. Ciro is alive (the film “midquel” told us so The immortal), survived the shot fired by Genny in the finale of the third season and is sheltered in Riga, Latvia, managing contacts with the Russians on behalf of a Neapolitan boss (one of the many we have seen in succession). Genny is a caged lion, forced into “a refuge that is a prison” with never dormant desires for revenge and now supported by o’Maestrale, a new character evoked at the end of the fourth season.

Already in the first episodes, the writing of Leonardo Fasoli and Maddalena Ravagli pays attention to the point, does not exceed in the embroideries, he goes to the heart of the most powerful message of “Gomorrah”: defeat as a background and landing of lives made of desperation, blinded by a fragile power, undermined by a substantial absence of any prospect of redemption. A cycle that has profoundly marked the relaunch of national seriality closes, an operation (born from Roberto Saviano’s best-seller) of raw realism that in the symbols of a cursed universe, in the minutiae of the crime chain, in the rough and inhuman skyline of a submerged Naples marked a break in our audiovisual production.
