The new year is coming, the children’s passport is going. From 2024 onwards, the identification document will no longer be issued for young people. Parents who want to go on a long-distance trip with their children will sooner or later need an ID card or passport with a chip for their children. We answer the most important questions:

Why will the children’s passport soon no longer be available?

The children’s passport is one of the few identification documents without a chip. This makes it less secure than chipped passports. “The chip contains, among other things, electronic security features that are easy to control and very difficult to forge,” says the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Homeland (BMI).

All standard ID documents without a chip have a shorter period of validity due to their lower security; for children’s passports it is one year. This simply means an enormous amount of effort for parents and administration to reapply every year. Passes without a chip also have limited acceptance. Other states can decide for themselves whether to recognize them or not.

When will the children’s passport be abolished?

“Children’s passports may only be issued, extended or updated until December 31, 2023,” the BMI continued. As long as the end of its validity has not yet been reached, your child can still travel with the child passport.

What is the alternative and how long is it valid?

From January 1st, things will be the same for children as for adults. An identity card is sufficient for traveling within the EU. A passport with a chip is usually required for travel beyond the borders of the European Union.

Both ID cards and passports are valid for six years for children. However, the BMI points out that children change so much within these six years that identification with the original identification document is sometimes no longer possible even before the end of its validity is reached.

Where and how do I apply for the identification documents?

Both identity cards and passports can be applied for at the Citizens’ Registration Office. You must bring a valid passport photo and an identification document. If your child has not previously had ID, you will need to show the birth certificate.

How much does the pass cost?

The passport costs 37.50 euros and the ID card costs 22.80 euros. “Outside Germany, an additional foreign surcharge is due,” says the BMI.
