Razor pimples or ingrown hairs often thwart smooth legs – with these steps you can shave successfully.

In summer temperatures, your legs also want to get some fresh air – preferably clean-shaven and well-groomed. Nasty razor bumps and ingrown hairs often spoil the look. The perfect shave can be achieved in these five steps.

Step 1: Soak and Exfoliate

Before the annoying hairs are removed, the leg skin should be properly prepared. Before shaving, it is therefore advisable to soak the skin in warm water for about 15 minutes. This causes the pores to open and the hair to become softer, making shaving a little more comfortable.

Regular peelings can ensure more beautiful skin in the long term. Before the blade is used, the legs should be treated with a peeling. You can make a paste yourself from olive oil, honey and sugar and rub it over dampened skin. In the drugstore, however, there are also numerous products that are wonderfully suitable for getting rid of dead skin cells. An alternative to granular peeling is acid peeling using glycolic or lactic acid. Liquid acid peels can also help with ingrown hairs, prevent red pimples and are suitable for sensitive skin.

Step 2: The right water temperature

Not freezing cold, not sweltering hot. Before removing hair with a razor, it is recommended to wet your legs with warm, not hot, water. The warm water temperatures ensure that the pores of the skin open, making shaving more comfortable and effective.

Water that is too hot closes the pores and can promote razor burn. However, the water should not be too cold either, as goosebumps make shaving more difficult and encourage injuries.

Step 3: Shaving Cream

Dry shaving or shaving with only water can favor the so-called strawberry skin, which shows up as a rash as small dots on the skin of the leg. Shaving foam is therefore ideal so that the razor can glide smoothly over the skin. In addition, you should never use too much foam, otherwise the blade can become clogged. All kinds of shaving foam can be found in drugstores, while sensitive versions and foams without fragrances are suitable for sensitive skin.

If no shaving foam is available, hair conditioner can be used for shaving as an alternative. It not only ensures soft hair, but also that the blade can slide easily over the leg.

Step 4: The right technique

Step by step: The legs have a lot of area and should not be shaved with a line from the ankle to the knee. So you can easily miss hair and have to go back to it afterwards. It is better to work your way up in small sections and always give the razor a quick wash with lukewarm water in between.

The legs should also always be shaved against the direction of hair growth – i.e. from bottom to top. In this way, stubble can be avoided, the hairs can rise and then be removed without much effort.

Step 5: The care after

Good skin care is essential for the perfect look, because who likes visibly dry skin? To ensure that the smooth feeling remains, the legs should be carefully dabbed dry with a towel immediately after shaving – do not rub or rub, as this irritates the skin unnecessarily!

Afterwards, the legs should be supplied with sufficient moisture. Those who tend to have dry skin can use richer creams. A particularly proven active ingredient is urea. It binds water and regulates the skin’s moisture balance. Don’t forget the sunscreen afterwards, because the skin is more sensitive to UV rays, especially after acid peelings. The higher the sun protection factor, the better. A great side effect: sun protection prevents visible skin aging.
