A major investment from Google is set to transform a historic site in Córdoba, Spain, into a leading center for vocational training and artificial intelligence (AI) development. The tech giant’s commitment was a centerpiece of the official launch of Campus Córdoba, touted as the first of its kind in Spain and the largest in Europe.
The newly renovated campus, built on the grounds of the former agricultural engineering school, represents a significant push to bridge the gap between education and industry. The project aims to provide 5,000 students with cutting-edge skills aligned with the evolving needs of the Spanish economy.
Google’s ‘Aria’ Project to Spearhead AI Education
Google’s presence will be anchored by “Project Aria,” a specialized AI training center within the campus. According to a company release, Gonzalo Romero, director of Google Iberia, stated, “We want the Google AI training center to be a benchmark.” The initiative will utilize new classrooms dedicated to artificial intelligence and robotics, scheduled to be operational for the next academic year.
The campus is unfolding in phases. The initial stage focuses on repurposing the former agricultural workshops into modern learning spaces. The second phase will involve the renovation of the main tower, which will house the second Hotel School in Spain, following the model of the renowned Madrid institution. This unique setup will foster an “immersive training” environment where students and professionals can live, learn, and collaborate.
A Model for Integrated Education and Employment
The Campus Córdoba project has garnered praise from regional officials. Rocío Blanco, the regional Employment Counselor, described the campus as a “pioneering project in Andalusia” for its integration of education and enterprise, aligning with the regional government’s strategic objectives.
The campus already boasts partnerships with established businesses, including the hospitality school of renowned chef Paco Morales, and training programs offered by Silbon and Motion. Google’s involvement further solidifies this commitment to industry collaboration.
The design of Campus Córdoba prioritizes adaptability, anticipating future demands, particularly those related to the Army Logistics Base in Córdoba. This forward-thinking approach positions the campus as a vital hub for workforce development in the region.
