Google has announced the operating system (OS) Android XR.

The presented system is designed to work with alternative reality devices – headsets and glasses. The OS will be integrated into gadgets that use virtual and augmented reality technologies, as well as artificial intelligence. Android XR has been called an open, unified platform for new generation gadgets.
The company noted that it developed the OS together with Samsung and Qualcomm. It supports ARCore, Android Studio, Jetpack Compose, Unity, OpenXR and other technologies. The first device based on Android XR will be a mixed reality headset from Samsung, tentatively called Project Moohan. The device will go on sale in 2025.
Google promised that all applications for smartphones and tablets available on Google Play will work on devices running Android XR. “For developers, this unified platform allows them to create experiences for a wide range of devices using familiar Android tools and frameworks,” the corporation emphasized.
