Google Maps is not only useful as a navigation system, but also as a simple compass. However, you have to know how to read it correctly.

For many users, Google Maps is the first choice when it comes to planning travel routes, finding places and navigating traffic. But the application also makes it easy to read cardinal directions. Find out how to use the Google Maps app as a compass here.

Immediately after starting, the map displayed by Google Maps is oriented so that north is at the top. Since the Google Maps app shows you not only your current position but also your direction of view in the form of a blue cone, the application can also be used as a compass.

For example, if the cone points upwards, you are looking north; if it points to the right, you are looking east. Accordingly, south is below and west is to the left.

A notice: However, this only applies if you have not rotated the map manually. If this is the case, Google Maps will show you a small compass symbol in the top right. The red needle always points north.

To reset the orientation of the map in Google Maps so that north is pointing straight up, simply tap the compass. As a result, the map will rotate and the compass icon will disappear until you change the orientation again.

If you want to rotate the map in a certain direction, press two fingers on the map and rotate it. The compass symbol shows you which direction is at the top. For example, if the red compass needle points to the right, then at the top is west.

A notice: If you don’t see your current location in Google Maps, make sure that GPS is activated on your smartphone and that the application has the necessary permissions to access the location data. Then tap the location icon in the bottom right of the Google Maps app. The app will then automatically show you your current location in the form of a blue dot on the map.
