Android 15 is ready. Google has released the source code to device manufacturers. However, some mobile phone users will have to be patient.

Google has announced the completion of Android 15 and delivered the mobile operating system to smartphone manufacturers. Unlike previous versions, however, Google’s own Pixel devices will only receive the update “in the coming weeks.” Google manager Matthew McCulloug announced this in a blog post.

The release notes of a beta version of Android 15 already stated in advance that the Pixel smartphones would receive the update in October 2024. The current Pixel 9 models were introduced in August, but are currently still being delivered with Android 14. Up until now, new Pixel devices have always come out directly with the latest Android version.

The reason for the delay at Google this year is that the development of hardware and software was done separately. While Pixel users will receive a new quality update first, manufacturers of other smartphones – including Samsung, Xiaomi, Honor, Lenovo, Motorola, Nothing and OnePlus – can now access the new source code. In theory, this could even make them faster than Google itself to release the upgrade to Android 15.

Android 15, which is also called “Vanilla Ice Cream” internally, brings with it various new features. These include “Private Space”, a separate user profile for hiding certain apps. In addition, Google’s in-house AI Gemini is getting some new features and improvements. These include audio descriptions of images and the ability for Google’s Chrome browser to read web pages aloud in the future.

Security features have also been expanded, allowing devices to be locked remotely in the event of theft or loss. These changes will be implemented on all devices as soon as they receive the operating system.
