Google Restricts Free Gemini and AI Plus in October; AI Pro Gets Deep Think

Free accounts are limited to Gemini Flash-Lite and the Pro model is removed from the $4,99 monthly AI Plus subscription when Google restructures its Gemini artificial intelligence application starting October 9, 2026. Three-tiered effort controls are introduced, tying advanced reasoning features like Deep Think to higher-priced professional plans.

Google Restructures Free and Paid Gemini Tiers Effective October 9

Google is overhauling access to its Gemini artificial intelligence platform starting October 9, 2026, tightening boundaries between its free tier and paid subscriptions.

The reorganization builds upon a computational resource system introduced in May, which calculates usage limits based on processing capacity rather than a static message count. Free users will no longer have the option to switch models when handling heavier queries such as summarizing PDFs or parsing long documents. Sundar Pichai noted during the summer that the standalone application surpassed one billion monthly users, the vast majority of whom do not pay for the service.

Beginning October 9, accounts without a Google AI subscription will be limited to Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, according to a support documentation update reported this week. Chatting with the AI, asking for explanations, summarizing information, or generating ideas will still be possible, and there is no data indicating the automatic disappearance of tools such as image generation, Deep Research, or Gems. The change cuts back options compared to the current free offering, which includes access to 3.6 Flash and variable access to 3.1 Pro, according to information published by The Decoder, with Google detailing the tiers on a support page.

Subscribers Lose Pro Access as Higher Tiers Add Deep Think

Paying customers on the entry-level AI Plus plan, which costs USD $4,99 per month (approximately 4,60 euros), will lose access to the Pro model. Subscribers will retain Flash-Lite and Gemini 3.6 Flash, but accessing the Pro model will require stepping up to AI Pro at USD $19,99 per month (about 18,30 euros) or the AI Ultra tier.

Subscribers on the AI Pro tier gain access to Deep Think, described as a parallel reasoning mode, that was previously restricted to the most expensive subscription brackets priced between $99,99 and $199,99 per month (approximately 91,50 and 183 euros). Google will notify affected AI Plus subscribers of the transition by email.

For those who subscribed to Plus for the Pro model, the company’s email will specify when they will lose access. Users subscribed to the Google AI Pro and AI Ultra plans (21.99 and 99.99 euros per month, respectively) will have access to all of the company’s available models, including the Gemini Pro 3.1 version. Google plans to reorganize Gemini access starting in October 2026: non-paying users are limited to Flash-Lite, while AI Plus subscribers no longer have access to Pro. The free tier retains only Gemini Flash-Lite; Flash and Pro are no longer included, and Google AI Plus, which costs $4.99 a month in the United States, keeps Flash-Lite and Flash, but loses Pro.

Gemini Application Rolls Out Adjustable Effort Levels

Alongside the model tier changes, the Gemini application is rolling out low, medium, and high effort controls for available models throughout October. Selecting a higher setting generates more thorough responses for demanding tasks, though it consumes a larger share of the user’s allocated processing quota.
