Google Revamps Gemini Overlay and Gemini Live on Android

Google is rapidly iterating on the visual and functional architecture of its AI integration for Android, rolling out a significant Gemini Android redesign that fundamentally alters how users interact with the assistant. The update focuses on two primary touchpoints: the Gemini overlay, which serves as the entry point for quick queries, and Gemini Live, the conversational voice experience.

These changes arrive as part of a high-velocity update cycle, following previous redesigns in February, and March. The latest shift indicates a move away from full-screen AI interruptions toward a more ambient, layered experience that allows the AI to coexist with other active applications rather than replacing them.

For users currently on the stable channel of the Google app, these features may not be immediately visible. The updates are appearing in Google app beta version 17.3, suggesting a phased rollout that will eventually reach the general public. The redesign reflects a broader industry trend toward “contextual computing,” where AI tools act as a transparent layer over the operating system.

A Unified Hub for AI Tools

The Gemini overlay—the “pill” that appears when users summon the assistant—has been streamlined to reduce visual clutter. In the new design, Google has merged the previously separate attachments and tools menus into a single, cohesive interface. The pill itself is now slightly narrower, while the “Ask Gemini” prompt has been enlarged for better legibility, and the microphone icon has transitioned to a modern outline style.

While the overlay handles static queries, Gemini Live—the real-time voice mode—is seeing a complete overhaul of its user interface. Previously, launching Live often felt like entering a dedicated mode that obscured the rest of the phone’s functionality. The new design replaces the full-screen interface with a floating overlay.

This floating interface centers on a dynamic waveform, flanked by buttons for screen sharing and a keyboard icon to exit the Live session. A captions button is now tucked into the top-right corner, allowing users to read the AI’s responses in real-time without leaving their current app. As users begin to navigate away from the home screen or open other applications, the Live overlay condenses into a small, unobtrusive circle, ensuring the voice session remains active in the background.

This architectural shift is present both when accessing Live via the overlay and when launching it from within the full Gemini app. By keeping the home screen visible underneath the AI interface, Google is reducing the “friction” of app-switching, allowing users to reference information on their screen while speaking with the AI.

The Strategic Shift in Android AI UX

From a software engineering perspective, these rapid visual updates suggest that Google is treating the Gemini interface as a living prototype. The move toward floating windows and combined menus indicates a goal of “ambient intelligence”—where the AI is always available but never in the way. By consolidating tools into a single bottom sheet, Google is mirroring a design pattern already being tested on the web, aiming for a consistent cross-platform experience.
