Google has confirmed that the legacy Google Assistant on Android phones, tablets, and paired devices will be shut down starting September 4, 2026. The deprecation—originally planned for late 2025—forces a permanent migration to Gemini as the default mobile assistant experience.
The September 4 Shutdown Date and Phased Rollout
Google Assistant’s tenure on mobile operating systems is drawing to a close. Google has now settled on a date to retire its pre-AI assistant robot, confirming via email notifications sent to users that the phased retirement begins on September 4, 2026. While an initial plan targeted a late 2025 shutdown, the timeline was extended to allow developers additional time to refine the Gemini ecosystem.

the company noted, adding that users will receive notifications as access is withdrawn on an individual basis.
Once the update reaches a device, users will no longer be able to use or switch back to Google Assistant on that hardware. Invoking the assistant via voice commands or by long-pressing the power button will automatically summon Gemini instead.
Affected Hardware: From Wearables to Connected Vehicles
The deprecation extends far beyond standard smartphones and tablets. Devices tightly paired with mobile ecosystems—including Wear OS smartwatches, supported headphones, and wireless earbuds—will also lose access to the legacy software once availability is removed.
Automotive setups face a split fate. Vehicles running Android Auto projected from a mobile device will lose Assistant functionality. However, cars equipped with Google built-in—meaning they run the automotive operating system natively without requiring a connected phone—will retain Google Assistant access past the September deadline.
Smart home hardware remains largely shielded from this specific mandate. Google TV devices, Google Home speakers, and smart displays do not face immediate removal of Assistant features, though Google has indicated that standalone Gemini integrations for those form factors are in development.
Hardware Exceptions and Minimum Requirements
Not every Android device is capable of running Gemini. For users holding onto older or lower-spec hardware, a legacy version of Assistant will remain on phones running Android 9 or older that feature less than 2GB of RAM, allowing those devices to handle basic tasks.
Similarly, users residing in regions where Gemini is not yet supported, or whose devices fail to meet minimum system requirements, will retain access to Google Assistant until broader company retirement milestones conclude.
Transition Strategy and Managing the Shift
Google has framed the forced migration as a necessary evolution toward conversational artificial intelligence. Support pages now feature banners informing users that Gemini can handle traditional assistant commands while facilitating more natural dialogue.
For those who prefer not to wait for the automatic over-the-air transition, the Gemini app remains available for manual download through the Play Store. Meanwhile, users clinging to the older infrastructure have only a brief window left before the option vanishes entirely from their screens.
