Google Wallet Gets Streamlined Interface on Pixel Devices with Android 16

Google Wallet is receiving a significant update on Pixel devices running Android 16, designed to expedite mobile payments and minimize disruption to user workflow. The new feature, discovered by a user of a Pixel 9 Pro Fold, introduces a semi-transparent interface that overlays the current screen, allowing users to select a payment card without leaving their existing app.

The update, rolling out at the end of June, builds upon a recent enhancement that allowed Pixel users to customize the double-tap gesture on the power button. Previously, this gesture launched the camera; now, it can be configured to open Google Wallet directly. This latest iteration goes a step further, bypassing the full Wallet app and presenting a streamlined payment selection process.

A New Layer for Faster Payments

Instead of fully opening the Wallet app, the new interface displays an NFC animation with the prompt “Maintain to read,” accompanied by a carousel of available cards. Below the carousel is a prominent “Open Wallet” button, offering users direct access to the payment interface. According to reports, the primary goal of this design is to provide greater flexibility in card selection during transactions.

One key advantage of this superimposed interface is its non-disruptive nature. Users can seamlessly return to their previous task once the mobile payment is complete, as the interface disappears after use. The design itself is described as simple, featuring a “Hold to Reader” button, the card carousel, card names, and a full-width button at the bottom of the screen.

Limited Rollout and Beta Access

The update isn’t yet available on all Pixel devices. 9to5Google reports that the rollout is currently limited to users participating in the Play Services beta and those running version 25.31 of the Wallet app.

To access the new experience, Pixel users must join the Google Wallet beta program through the Play Store, ensure Google Play Services is up-to-date, and configure Wallet to launch with a double-tap of the power button. This new interface aims to simplify mobile payments, allowing for a quicker and more fluid experience in retail environments.

This update represents Google’s continued commitment to refining the mobile payment experience, prioritizing both speed and convenience for its users.
