Leon Goretzka is missing from FC Bayern’s squad for the DFB Cup opener. Is a change on the horizon? Before the match in Ulm, sporting director Max Eberl speaks out – and is clear.

Is everything happening so quickly now that a national player is saying goodbye to Munich? The new Bayern coach Vincent Kompany has left out Leon Goretzka from the squad of the German record champions for his competitive debut – even though the 29-year-old is apparently fit. Several media outlets had already reported on him beforehand, and the information matched that of t-online. Goretzka is considered a candidate for sale in Munich, and it seems that national players are no longer expected to play a major role.

Sports director Max Eberl indirectly confirmed this on ZDF before the cup duel with second division club SSV Ulm. “We simply have a very, very good squad. The players know that their situation can be difficult,” he said. “We have communicated that very clearly. He has a contract, Bayern Munich accepts all contracts.”

With Joshua Kimmich, Aleksandar Pavlović, new signing João Palhinha and Konrad Laimer, Goretzka has four opponents in his position in central midfield.
Stefan Effenberg therefore advised Goretzka to leave in his t-online column. “Palhinha will be a given and I also see all the other midfielders ahead of Goretzka at the moment. He has to realise that too,” wrote Effenberg. As a player, you have to “reflect on whether going to another club might not be the better option,” Effenberg continued.

There are also said to be potential new clubs: According to the “Bild” newspaper, two teams, Atlético Madrid and SSC Naples, are said to be interested in Goretzka. However, according to t-online information, the national player himself is not considering a transfer and wants to fight for his place. His contract in Munich runs until 2026.
