Laboratorios Gornitz SA were founded in 1948 by Salomón Gornitz, in the city of Villa María. At that time, 75 years ago, biochemistry and medicine were very different from today.

“The diagnoses were based fundamentally on the clinic, that is, on what the doctor saw and talked to the patient, while complementary studies were an exception in special cases,” says Pablo Gornitz, son of the founder and current president of the signature.

The businessman continues: “Over time, science has evolved and today it has gone to the point where professionals often rely more on these methods than on clinical examination.”

development and technology

Gornitz recounts that, when it was founded, the laboratory’s technology consisted of monocular microscopes and noble animals, such as toads or rabbits, which gave their lives so that the biochemist could collaborate with the doctor in the diagnoses.

“As the years went by, it was transformed from an artisanal company (science and art) to a business one, currently made up of 55 people”, highlights the businessman.

In addition to serving patients from Villa María, the venture provides services to a large part of the country. The samples are collected by 15 people in a dependency relationship with company vehicles, who visit laboratories, clinics and hospitals in other provinces.

In a short time, the results are uploaded to the website so that biochemists can consult them in a traceable way, to know which techniques were used.

“This is the result of the trust that Laboratorios Gornitz SA has consolidated, thanks to the trajectory, performance, training and the incorporation of technology that the establishment currently has”, celebrates the president of the company.

technological vanguard

In 2016, thanks to an agreement with Siemens, the company installed the second automation system in the country and the seventh in Latin America. This structure makes it possible to process large quantities of patient samples with high international levels of quality.

Bulk processing makes it easy to provide a high-quality service at a low cost, something that matters more than ever, not only to the health area but also to the whole of society.

multiple services

In addition to continuing to serve outpatients and hospitalized patients in the region, Laboratorios Gornitz SA offers a wholesale service to supply the sample automation system, which requires a complex logistics network.

“We also do non-human testing, such as veterinary, environmental, water, and the like,” adds Gornitz.

Social responsability

The businessman assures: “Every time a health problem with an impact on society has arisen (hemorrhagic fever, influenza, covid, dengue, etc.), the laboratory has been closely linked to the work to combat it.”

Pablo Gornitz, President of Laboratorios Gornitz SA.

“It is a company with open doors, with the trust transmitted generationally and with the permanent job of making the best effort to provide the best service,” he says.

The reality of SMEs

Gornitz points out: “Entrepreneurships in the health sector have a particularity with respect to SMEs, because sometimes not even the actors themselves recognize them as companies.” He assures that, although many of the institutions are not for profit, if there are no profits there is no reinvestment, subsistence or growth.

In the case of Laboratorios Gornitz SA, the last few years have been one of sustained development and it has gone from being a local institution to one with a national scope.

“Putting it in numbers, when I joined the company, in 1996, we processed 100 patient samples per day and we are currently serving 5,500 daily, reaching 2,500,000 tests per year,” said the president.

The future

In the near future, the businessman hopes to build a new laboratory, which can process at least four times the current production, expand the staff that works in the establishment and provide the service to provinces that it has not yet reached.

“Is this desire going to be fulfilled only with the efforts of the owners, or is Argentina creating the conditions for a 75-year-old company to continue growing and survive another period of the same period?” Gornitz asks, to which he replies: “We are in a turning point in which the answer to this question will be given by the community, when it chooses between the work country model that our parents dreamed of or a subsidized, state-owned and deficient one”.
