Goseong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do is taking steps to achieve zero abandoned animals through a pet adoption event. Goseong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do (Governor Lee Sang-geun) plans to continue its pet adoption event from April 20 to October, taking a step closer to achieving zero abandoned animals.

This event is an event in which Goseong-gun and the Goseong-gun Pet Club, an animal protection group, take to the streets to promote active adoption by reaching out to residents in order to promote the sale of abandoned animals being cared for at animal protection centers.

Through this, the military seeks to minimize the euthanasia of abandoned animals and establish a mature companion culture by changing the perception of companion animals.

Above all, Goseong-gun, which attempted to innovate the animal distribution paradigm by adopting abandoned animals from public institutions in March last year, is making various efforts, such as holding adoption events and supporting neutering surgeries, to become a region without abandoned animals.

Abandoned animals adopted from public institutions are re-adopted into private homes.

The county announced that out of a total of 40 abandoned animals adopted by 20 public institutions, including the Goseong County Office, Goseong County Council, and towns and villages last year, 26 were re-adopted to private families.

Of these, a total of 16 dogs, two of which lived together in eight public institutions, were each adopted into the same family and became like brothers.

A lot of attention has been focused on the rare cases of public institutions proactively adopting abandoned animals, and there has also been a lot of concern that the original purpose of expanding exposure to abandoned animals to a large number of complainants and leading to adoption through active participation of the administration will not be effectively achieved.

However, the abandoned animals that took on the role of mascots for public institutions, receiving love and attention from citizens visiting public institutions or residents passing by, met new family members who they often saw and became attached to.

Goseong-gun said that its active promotion of adoption-related support projects also played a role in revitalizing adoption.

When adopting, we support neutering and animal registration.

As a result of the county’s active efforts to promote adoption, 64 new animals were admitted after the number of animals protected at the animal protection center was reduced to 46 after adoption by public institutions last year, but currently, 48 animals are protected and the number of animals protected is maintained at about 50.

Support for neutering surgery to suppress indiscriminate breeding

Goseong-gun is promoting a project to support neutering of outdoor dogs and stray cats in rural areas to prevent the number of abandoned animals from increasing due to indiscriminate breeding.

A total project cost of KRW 172.4 million was spent on 430 dogs aged 5 months or older, kept outdoors in rural areas, such as in yards, or kept loose inside fences. The cost of neutering surgery, including animal registration, is limited to a maximum of KRW 390,000 per dog. Supported by

For 1,500 stray cats, we will provide support within 200,000 won per cat, with a total project cost of 300 million won.

Last year, we provided neutering surgery for 1,159 outdoor dogs and 2,341 stray cats.

Animals subject to neutering surgery can be transported directly to the animal hospital by the dog owner, resident, cat mom, etc., or if it is difficult to transport them directly, if a mobile volunteer service is requested, the mobile volunteer group will transport the animal.

For mobile volunteering, you can apply at the Goseong-gun Livestock Department.

Establishment of Goseong-gun Animal Protection Center to promote animal welfare by improving the protection environment

Although the number of sheltered animals has plummeted due to adoption of abandoned animals and the population of abandoned animals is decreasing due to support for neutering surgeries, many animals still need help. Accordingly, the county is promoting the establishment of an animal protection center to provide a better environment for animals by improving and expanding shelters, thereby contributing to reducing the number of abandoned animals by increasing adoption rates.

The Goseong-gun Animal Protection Center is scheduled to be newly built with two floors above ground and a total floor area of 670㎡ on the surplus land of the water supply and sewerage office.

On the first floor, it is planned to be created as an animal-friendly space where animals and people coexist, as it not only has spaces necessary to protect abandoned animals, such as a dog care room, an isolation room, an operating room, and a beauty salon, but also a companion community space and a pet playground.

The second floor will be comprised of an office, an education room, and a cat protection room.

The county is accelerating the construction of an animal protection center with the goal of completion this year.

Goseong-gun Mayor Lee Sang-geun said, “The results of various efforts to reduce abandoned animals are showing visible results,” and added, “We will continue to strive to create a Goseong-gun where there are no abandoned animals and pets live happily with people in warm homes.”
