Colombo: Former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who left the country following the popular uprising, has returned to Sri Lanka. Gotabaya, who left the country seven weeks ago, landed at the Colombo airport last night. Party leaders came to receive him.

After leaving the country following the agitation, Gotabaya was staying in Maldives, Singapore and Thailand on a visitor visa. Enraged by the economic crisis, the people occupied the President’s residence.

Gotabaya’s return comes in the context of the election of a new president and the receipt of a 2.9 billion US dollar financial assistance from the IMF to overcome the financial crisis.
