On March 2, four Russian army fighter jets entered Swedish airspace. According to the television station “TV4 Nyheterna”, two of them were equipped with tactical nuclear weapons.
The fighter jets are said to have started from a Russian military base in Kaliningrad.
Then they set course for the Swedish island of Gotland.
According to the Swedish Air Force Chief, this threat is taken very seriously.
About four weeks ago, several Russian fighter jets entered Swedish airspace. Because Sweden was on a higher alert because of the Ukraine war, interceptors from the Swedish Air Force immediately rose to chase the invaders away, as reported by the Swedish television station TV4 Nyheterna. The Swedish pilots are said to have made an explosive sighting.
According to information from the TV station, two of the four Russian fighter jets were equipped with tactical nuclear weapons. According to the broadcaster, the pilots “showed this clearly”. Accordingly, two Sukhoi 24 jets were escorted by two Sukhoi 27 fighter planes. The fighter jets are said to have started from a Russian military base in Kaliningrad.
Swedish Air Force confirms airspace intrusion only
Swedish Air Force Chief Carl-Johan Edstrom confirmed to TV4 Nyheterna that Russian fighter jets had entered Swedish airspace. “We consider this to be a conscious act, which is very serious, especially when it’s a country at war.” However, the Swedish Air Force did not want to announce whether and with how many nuclear bombs the fighter planes were equipped.
The Air Force chief could not rule out whether the Russian fighter pilots had made a mistake in navigating. Nevertheless, there are many indications that the jets deliberately entered Swedish airspace. All in all, the jets are said to have been over Swedish territory for around a minute.
They were then chased away by two Swedish Air Force JAS-39 Gripen fighter jets. They managed to take photos of the Russian planes, which experts say contain nuclear weapons.
