On the morning of the 5th, the government received the ‘Act on the Appointment of a Special Prosecutor to Investigate the Truth about Obstruction of Investigation of Marines and Cover-up of Cases’ (Marine Corps Special Prosecutor Act) from the National Assembly.
The Marine Corps Special Prosecutor Act is intended to determine whether there was external pressure from the Office of the President and the Ministry of National Defense during the investigation into the death of a Marine who went missing during a search for a missing person in the flood damage in Yecheon, Gyeongbuk Province in July of last year.
The Marine Corps Special Prosecutor Act was passed in the National Assembly plenary session the day before (the 4th) with 189 in favor and 1 against out of 190 members present. It has been 37 days since it was finally scrapped after a re-vote in the 21st National Assembly on May 28.
Earlier, on May 2, the Marine Corps Special Prosecutor Act passed the plenary session led by the opposition party. However, on the 21st of the same month, President Yoon exercised his right to request reconsideration and returned it to the National Assembly, and on the 28th, in the plenary session revoking it, it failed to obtain the approval of more than two-thirds of the attendees, which was the requirement for passage, and was scrapped.
A bill that has passed the National Assembly and been transferred to the government must be promulgated within 15 days or the right to request reconsideration must be exercised. The deadline for processing is the 20th.
The Blue House is expressing strong displeasure at the re-passage of the Marine Corps Special Prosecutor Act, calling it an “intentional impeachment multiplier,” and President Yoon is expected to exercise his right to request reconsideration.
