The mixed parliamentary commission of inquiry (CPMI) to investigate the extremist acts of January 8 begins to draw a profile of action with the choices of members by party leaders. Government and opposition are betting on media parliamentarians with experience in the political game. The objective of both is to give visibility and try to win during the dispute for each side’s version.

Allies of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) expect the participation of the former president’s children and former ministers to give body and establish a firm defense to the previous government, aware that the base of the current government will support the idea that attacks on headquarters of the Three Powers were motivated by speeches by the former head of the federal Executive, especially the questioning of the credibility of electronic voting machines.

The name of Senator Damares Alves (Republicanos-DF) has already been confirmed. Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) and deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP) are quoted for vacancies. The agreement that has been worked out is for at least one of the former president’s sons to compose the commission to defend the father’s direct interests.

The opposition will try to show that the current management of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) was silent about the announcements of the attacks and that the lack of action allowed the episode. Group parliamentarians promise to take documents that would prove “purposeful inertia” on the part of the current management.

The government supporters, in turn, decided to embrace the CPMI after considering its installation inevitable, especially after the dissemination of images of the Palácio do Planalto showing servants of the Institutional Security Office (GSI) and the then chief minister of the portfolio, Gonçalves Dias , amid the vandals during the raids on January 8. With the command of the works and majority in the composition, the idea is to direct the investigations.

With the aim of securing one more seat for Lula’s allied base and taking a vacancy from the opposition, the leader of the government in Congress, Randolfe Rodrigues (Rede-AP), changed blocks to change proportionality. He wants to be one of the CPMI members. “I don’t miss this party,” he said.

Randolfe was part of the leadership of the Pandemic CPI. The government’s base in the National Congress wants to sign the same team that headed the investigations during the health emergency because it is made up of parliamentarians considered “weighty” among the government supporters. Senators Renan Calheiros (MDB-AL), Omar Aziz (PSD-AM) and Eduardo Braga (MDB-AM) are also quoted.

Under the rotation system adopted by Congress, the commission’s rapporteur would remain with the Senate. Senator Fabiano Contarato (PT-ES) is a possibility, but Calheiros would be the prominent name. However, as he is the main political opponent of the mayor, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), the expectation is that the position will remain with Eduardo Braga, which would avoid clashes between defenders of the government’s agenda.

The presidency will be with an ally of Lira, appointed by the superblock led by the mayor. After congressman André Fufuca (PP-MA) told the R7 who would “decline” from the possibility of leading the CPMI, the path was free for the main candidate: deputy Arthur Maia (União Brasil-BA).

“I join this commission looking for the truth, we have to make a historical rescue of what happened on January 8th, so that other generations know how Brazil reacted on January 8th”, stated Maia.

The president of Congress, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), stated that the expectation is to install the commission this week. There will be 16 seats for each of the Houses, in addition to the substitutes.
