As determined by President Lula, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) works to minimize the negative impacts on milk producers caused by the increase in production costs and the significant growth in imports of the product. The situation directly affects the competitiveness and profitability of dairy farming.

With this objective in mind, Mapa, in partnership with the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Conab, provided resources of R$ 200 million to support the commercialization of powdered milk. The acquisition will be made by the National Supply Company (Conab) through the Food Acquisition Program (PAA), in the Direct Purchase modality. In the coming days, Conab will disclose more details about the operation.

The powdered milk to be purchased will be destined for people in conditions of food and nutritional insecurity, as required by the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger (MDS).

The purchase makes it possible to reinforce food and nutritional security actions. Powdered milk is a product that can be included in food baskets or donated to entities that provide food to people in food and nutritional insecurity situations.

The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, explains that the measure will support milk prices and provide security to cooperatives and producers.

“The government as a whole is committed to promoting the return to competitiveness of dairy products and income to milk producers in Brazil. Let’s improve together and bring results”, stresses the minister.

Government raises import tax on dairy products

This Tuesday (15), the Executive Management Committee (Gecex) of the Foreign Trade Chamber (Camex) approved the increase in import tax from 12% to 18%, for a period of one year, for three dairy products.

They are: 1) Butyric butter oil, used as an ingredient in processed cheeses, other dairy products, sauces and breads; 2) Moldy (blue) cheeses and other cheeses with veins obtained using Penicillium roqueforti; 3) and cheeses with a moisture content equal to or greater than 46% and less than 55% by weight – soft dough.

Another Gecex decision was the annulment of 29 dairy product items that had reduced the Common External Tariff (TEC) by 10%, through Gecex Resolution No. 353, of 2022

Thus, 29 products will have import tax ranging from 10.8% to 14.4%. Some examples on this list are yogurt (14.4%), butter (14.4%), grated cheese (14.4%) and dulce de leche (14.4%).

Oversight

Other measures are also being taken in terms of inspection. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock is attentive to the entry of non-compliant products at Brazilian borders.

“Mapa is vigilant and intensifying inspections regarding the hydration of powdered milk, which is prohibited and will be strictly punished”, warns Fávaro.
